What Does General Liability Cover?

Business owners often ask an important question: “What does general liability cover?”

It is a common question because business insurance can feel confusing, especially when several types of coverage are mentioned together. Two coverages that are often misunderstood are general liability insurance and business property coverage. They are both important, but they are designed to protect different parts of a business.

General liability insurance may help protect your business if someone claims your business caused injury, property damage, or certain personal and advertising injuries. In simple terms, it is often about claims made by other people against your business.

For example, if a customer slips and falls at your business location and claims your business was responsible, general liability may help with covered costs. If your employee accidentally damages a customer’s property while doing work, general liability may also come into play. It may also help with certain claims involving personal and advertising injury, such as libel, slander, copyright issues in advertising, or false advertising claims, depending on the policy.

Business property coverage is different.

Business property coverage helps protect the physical items your business owns or uses to operate. This may include equipment, inventory, furniture, computers, tools, fixtures, and supplies. If those items are damaged by a covered event, such as fire, theft, vandalism, or certain weather-related losses, business property coverage may help pay to repair or replace them.

The easiest way to understand the difference is this: general liability is often about harm or damage your business is accused of causing to someone else. Business property coverage is about protecting the physical property your business owns.

Both types of coverage can be important because a business may face more than one kind of risk. A customer injury, damaged client property, stolen equipment, or a fire in your workspace can all create serious financial stress. Having the right coverage in place helps protect the business from unexpected events that could interrupt operations or create costly out-of-pocket expenses.

That is why business owners should not assume one policy covers everything. A general liability policy may not cover your own equipment or inventory. A property policy may not cover a customer injury claim. Each coverage has a different job.
